چکیده

[1] We have examined differences in regional and seasonal variability among seven global climatologies of sea-surface dimethyl sulfide (DMS) concentrations. We found large differences between recent climatologies and that typically used by most atmospheric sulfur models. The relative uncertainty (1s/mean) in the latitudinal distribution of the annual mean DMS concentration increases from about 50% in tropical and temperate regions to nearly 100% in the high latitudes. We also compared these climatologies to new measurements in the North Atlantic Ocean taken during the 2001 Programme Océan Multidisciplinaire Méso Echelle (POMME) expeditions.

Perception of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) by loggerhead sea turtles: a possible mechanism for locating high-productivity oceanic regions for foraging.

During their long-distance migrations, sea turtles of several species feed on jellyfish and other invertebrates that are particularly abundant in ocean regions characterized by high productivity. An ability to distinguish productive oceanic regions from other areas, and to concentrate foraging activities in locations where prey density is highest, might therefore be adaptive. The volatile compo...

Sources And Cycling of Carbonyl Sulfide in the Sargasso Sea

The cycling of the radiatively important gas carbonyl sulfide (OCS) was studied in surface waters of the Sargasso Sea. In August 1999, surface OCS concentrations averaged 8.6 pmol L21, showed minor diel variations, and varied little with depth. An OCS precursor, total dissolved organic sulfur (DOS), was lowest at the surface (40 nmol L21) and increased with depth. The photoproduction rate of OC...

"Sizing" Heterogeneous Chemistry in the Conversion of Gaseous Dimethyl Sulfide to Atmospheric Particles.

The oxidation of biogenic dimethyl sulfide (DMS) emissions is a global source of cloud condensation nuclei. The amounts of the nucleating H2SO4(g) species produced in such process, however, remain uncertain. Hydrophobic DMS is mostly oxidized in the gas phase into H2SO4(g) + DMSO(g) (dimethyl sulfoxide), whereas water-soluble DMSO is oxidized into H2SO4(g) in the gas phase and into SO4(2-) + Me...

Investigation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and its spatial changes in Gulf of Oman for the period of 2003 to 2015

Considering the great application of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) in climatic and oceanic investigations, this research deals with the investigation of spatial autocorrelation pattern of SST data obtained from AVHRR sensor for Gulf of Oman from 2003 to 2015 (13 years). To achieve this aim, two important spatial statistics, i.e. global Moran and Anselin local Moran’s I were employed within mont...

Distinct compositions of free-living, particle-associated and benthic communities of the Roseobacter group in the North Sea.

The Roseobacter group is one of the predominant lineages in the marine environment. While most investigations focus on pelagic roseobacters, the distribution and metabolic potential of benthic representatives is less understood. In this study, the diversity of the Roseobacter group was characterized in sediment and water samples along the German/Scandinavian North Sea coast by 16S rRNA gene ana...
